(AP) ? Gabby Douglas believed two years ago, when she convinced her mother to let her move halfway across the country.

Martha Karolyi became a convert over the winter, when the bubbly teenager with the electric smile developed the tenacity required to be a champion.

Under the brightest lights, on the biggest stage, that belief shattered a glass ceiling.

Even if the first African-American to win an Olympic all-around title didn't quite realize it.

"I kind of forgot about that," Douglas said with a laugh.

Don't worry, Gabby, the world is going to have fun reminding you.

Douglas soared her way into history Thursday night, leading the whole way to climb a mountain paved by Ron Galimore, Dominique Dawes and a handful of others who showed the sport isn't just for the white or the privileged.

"How inspiring is that?" said Natalie Hawkins, the woman who allowed her then 14-year-old "baby" daughter to move from Virginia to Iowa in 2010 after Douglas convinced her that she was good enough to compete at the top.

She didn't have to wait long to find out.

Douglas was still trying to get used to the feeling of having her second gold medal in three days around her neck when Oprah chimed in.

"OMG I'm so THRILLED for Gabby. Flowing happy tears!!" Winfrey posted on Twitter.

Karolyi, the U.S. women's team coordinator called it "history made" while Liang Chow, the coach who channeled Douglas' precocious talent, believes his star pupil is "ready to move onto higher things."

She certainly looked like it on a flawless night in which Douglas grabbed the gold during her first event and never let silver medalist Viktoria Komova of Russia come close to wrenching it from her hands.

Explosive on vault and exquisite on uneven bars, Douglas never trailed. Though she sealed the third straight women's all-around title for an American with a floor routine that delighted the O2 Arena crowd, it was her pretty set on beam that provided the difference.

The event is a 90-second test of nerves, a twisting, turning ballet on a 4-inch slab of wood 4 feet off the ground. And for months, Douglas struggled to find a rhythm on it.

She led the national championships after the first day, only to hop off the beam moments into her first rotation of the finals, opening the door for world champion and friendly rival Jordyn Wieber to claim the title.

Wieber watched the Olympic finals from 20 rows up in the stands with the rest of Team USA after failing to make it out of qualifying. Teammate Aly Raisman never really recovered from a workmanlike set on bars and an uncharacteristic wobble on beam.

Raisman ended up tying with Russia's Aliya Mustafina for third, but the steely Russian earned the bronze on a tiebreaker, a wrenching setback for the American captain, an integral part of the group that won the first U.S. team gold in 16 years on Tuesday.

There were no such technicalities involved with Douglas, not even on the beam. She dazzled with a sparkling 15.5, never wavering, never wobbling, never losing focus.

This was the same girl who was so out of sorts when the team arrived in London a couple of weeks ago that Karolyi ordered Chow to give her a little pep talk?

Chow's message that day wasn't complicated. He urged Douglas to ignore the pain in her leg from a minor muscle strain and get down to business.

"He just said that everyone has pain, so just go out there and you know, why are you focused on that?" Douglas said. "He said, 'You're at the Olympics, and put that behind you, and, if you don't push it now you don't have a chance, you'll regret it.'"

She didn't. Not after winning her mother over with the idea her future lay in Iowa with Chow instead of her family's home in Virginia Beach. Not after those long days in the gym when she would ask herself, "Why do I have to do this?" only to go and do it anyway.

And not after a little boost from Karolyi. The legendary coach made Douglas a surprising choice for the American Cup in New York in March. At the time, Karolyi said she just wanted Douglas to get some needed experience against a talented field.

But she knew.

She'd known for months.

She'd seen it during the training camps at the Karolyi Ranch north of Houston, where Douglas started to showcase the world-class talent Chow had spent a year unlocking.

Douglas went and won the whole thing that day at Madison Square Garden as an alternate, the asterisk next to her name officially making her ineligible for the title actually won by Wieber.

Still, the message had been sent. Douglas was ready.

"I foresee it," Karolyi said. "She charged every single competition she did better and better."

By then, Douglas' mom was won over. She raised four kids largely on her own, and tearfully made the decision to let her youngest train with Chow. She doubted herself but looked at the list of "pros" and "cons" her eldest daughter wrote up, and understood go she had to let go. Just a little.

Even if it hurt.

"I must have lost my marbles," Hawkins said. "But she wanted this more than anything."

And Douglas worked like it. Chow believes she just needed time to grow up. She's just 16.

Funny, she certainly looked all grown up on Thursday night. On a night that would turn most girls her age to tears, Douglas smiled. She laughed. She acted as if she expected to be here all along.

"She demonstrated she is an Olympic champion," Chow said.

One that could have a major influence on her sport.

Unlike some of her peers, Douglas looks like she's having fun out there. There is no drama when she competes, just joy. She has an energy that will make advertising executives swoon and likely turn her into a millionaire in the near future.

But this was never about money. It wasn't even about breaking down barriers. It was simply about challenging herself.

She never doubted she could be the best. Even when she was the only one who thought so.

"I wanted to seize the moment," she said.

History was just a bonus.

How Mould Will Impact Your Allergies This Year - Your Golf Fitness

Moulds produce irritants that can jeopardize the health of individuals with weak immune systems ? the very young, the aged, the sick, not to mention people that already experience allergies including asthma and rhinitis.

Moulds serve as a crucial source in the feeding cycle of the dust mite, aiding the mites growth and increase in quantities of the mites in your house, place of work or accommodation facility. Killing mould before it spreads and worsens problems is a crucial step for asthma and allergy sufferers.

As mould grows, it eventually reaches the stage to where it distributes spores which become airborne after disturbance (like through an air-con system or vacuuming inside the home).

Mould spores?are dangerous to your health because aside from being allergenic, spores of some mould species (for example Stachybotrys) contain harmful toxins called mycotoxins. Symptoms associated with mould spores can include?sneezing, runny or blocked nose, coughing,?phlegm in throat?and postnasal drip. Other symptoms include joint pain, asthma or even depression. Mould deteriorates the immune system and can render you more susceptible to other, more severe health issues. Extreme and prolonged exposure to certain mould toxins can lead to cancer.

Mould growth is associated with moisture problems and it is very difficult to kill mould completely. However, mould growth can be controlled by keeping your home or office as dry as you possibly can with a low relative humidity of under 65% to 70%.

Regardless if you are an allergy or asthma sufferer, everybody in the home or the commercial premises, is advised to clean damp areas where mould is likely to be growing.?Moud removal?provides welcome relief, protecting your family, your staff in commercial premises and your guests in accomodation facilities.

These areas should have adequate ventilation and air flow. Musty-smelling furniture and bedding, office or personal effects should be removed, along with damp carpets, because these items are often breeding and feeding grounds for mould.

Use?dehumidifier hire?to remove moisture from the air when it?s needed most. Even when a room does not feel at all damp you?ll be amazed just how much moisture these machines remove from the environment each day. They reduce dampness at a very fast rate and so are an important part of killing mould.

NASA's Curiosity rover faces its moment of truth

ScienceDaily (Aug. 2, 2012) ? The Mars Science Laboratory is set to reach its destination the evening of Aug. 5 Pacific time, when its Curiosity rover will begin its complex descent to the planet. It will represent a moment of truth for researchers not only at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) in Pasadena, Calif., but for contributors across NASA and around the world.

Jim Montgomery, field test lead at JPL for the Mars Science Laboratory Terminal Descent Sensor, detailed contributions of NASA's Dryden Flight Research Center to flight testing the MSL's landing radar at a NASA Dryden colloquium July 25.

"JPL and NASA Dryden had a very strong partnership where we did some field testing of a core part of the Terminal Descent Sensor, or landing system," Montgomery said. "When we land on Mars on Aug 5 at 10:31 p.m. local time, you all should be very proud of your role."

The flight testing at Dryden helped validate the MSL's Terminal Descent Sensor, or TDS, a sophisticated pulse-Doppler landing radar system. The TDS functions were verified during a series of field tests over Mars-like terrain and using flight-like conditions expected during the descent and landing of MSL.

Because the TDS will operate over a large range of altitudes and velocities, different venues and methods were necessary to test it over a five-year period. From July 2006 to June 2011, those tests were ongoing at Dryden and other venues, including use of a commercial helicopter and the 100-meter tall Echo Towers at the Naval Air Weapons Station at China Lake, Calif.

Dryden hosted and supported two series of flight tests of the MSL rover's landing radar, the first under a helicopter in 2010 and a follow-on series with the radar housed in a Quick Test Experimental Pod mounted under the wing of a Dryden F/A-18 in June 2011.

"We would not have gone to Mars if we could not have made the F/A-18 campaign work. There were a lot of red flags and we were able to reduce that risk to an acceptable level," Montgomery said.

The most recent tests last year focused on the on-chute acquisition portion of the MSL's entry into the Martian atmosphere, when the spacecraft is suspended from its parachute. Data collected from the flights were used to finesse the MSL's landing radar software to ensure that it was calibrated as accurately as possible prior to Curiosity's landing.

"We did a wonderful verification and validation campaign. We had simulation, we had analysis, we had lab testing and, of course, the field testing. All of those pieces together make us very confident, but not overly confident, that the radar is going to do its job on landing day," he said.

The Mars Science Laboratory was launched on Nov. 26, 2011 and could soon begin its two-year mission.

"We are landing in Gale crater, which is very interesting from the scientific perspective," said Montgomery. "We are landing in a very deep crater with a mountain in the center. What's great about this is as you dig down though the surface you are digging backward in time. We are going to land back in time and slowly drive into the future looking at the history of Mars as we drive," he said.

This is the first rover that was not limited as to where it could go because of engineering constraints, he added.

"MSL is a roving science laboratory. It's like we have our field geologist there with a really good laboratory. Past missions proved water existed on Mars in the past and that ice is on the surface now. This mission is focused on finding habitats that could have supported life," he said.

The Mars Science Laboratory builds on the success of the Spirit and Opportunity Mars Exploration Rovers during the past eight years. The rovers were intended to complete a 90-day mission, but continued to operate far longer than expected. In fact, Opportunity is still returning information from its continuing exploration.

Mars is a challenging destination where only a third of the missions have landed successfully. Mission planners intend for Curiosity to add volumes of new information to enhance humankind's knowledge of Mars and answer some questions about its history.

Sigma 30mm F1.4 EX DC HSM

The Sigma 30mm F1.4 EX DC HSM ($690 list) is the APS-C version of the classic fast 50mm lens that, before the popularity of zoom lenses, was the standard lens paired with 35mm SLRs. This lens is a little shorter than 50mm on an APS-C camera?its field of view is more like that of a 45mm, which is closer to a true normal perspective. It is available for Sigma, Canon, Nikon, Sony/Minolta, Pentax, and Four Thirds cameras.

The lens itself is short and squad, measuring 2.3 by 3 inches (HD) and weighing 15.2 ounces. Its front element is rather large for a prime lens, requiring the use of 62mm filters.? It's a lot bigger and heavier than the Nikon AF-S DX Nikkor 35mm f/1.8G ($199.95) lens, which is 2.1 by 2.8 inches in size and weighs only 7 ounces?at the cost of only a half-stop of light gathering capability.

I used Imatest to measure the image quality produced by this lens when paired with the Sigma SD1 Merrill . The results were disappointing. At f/1.4 it netted only 1,220 lines per picture height, well shy of the 1,800 required for a sharp image. The center portion of the photo was sharp at 1,900 lines, but the sharpness quickly drops as you move away from the middle of the image. It improves to 1,550 lines at f/2, and finally hits 1,868 lines at f/4. The lens is sharpest at f/5.6, where it records 2,042 lines, but by that point you've lost the ability to create a really shallow depth of field. Distortion is also an issue with this lens?it produces 1.8 percent barrel distortion, which is really too much for a standard-angle prime lens.

The real appeal of the Sigma 30mm F1.4 EX DC HSM is its fast f/1.4 aperture. Unfortunately, shooting at this setting gives you images with very soft edges and corners, so you'll need to compose your images with that in mind. The lens is pretty usable, but not tack sharp, at f/2, but at that point you can consider an f/1.8 or f/2 lens of an equivalent focal length in the camera mount of your choosing. Generally speaking, these lenses are generally smaller, lighter, and less expensive.
