Groupon said that it was selling online deals at higher prices during the period. and that put it on the hook for larger refunds. The revision lowered the company's quarterly revenue by $14.3 million and widened its loss by $22.6 million, or 4 cents per share.
The company originally reported in February a surprise loss of $42.7 million, or 8 cents per share, for the period. It said at the time that its revenue nearly tripled to $506.5 million from the same quarter a year earlier.
Groupon's auditor Ernst & Young also flagged a weakness in the company's internal controls over its financial statement for the period in a regulatory filing Friday.
Groupon said it is working to identify and address the underlying causes and said it may have added expenses to solve the problem, including the cost of hiring more financial staff for the quickly growing company.
The company's shares plunged in after-hours trading on the news.
This is not the first time Groupon has struggled to get its financial reporting in order. The company faced federal scrutiny before its initial public offering for the way it accounted for revenue.
Groupon makes money by sending out frequent emails to subscribers offering a chance to buy discount deals for anything from manicures to ballroom dance lessons. The company takes a cut of what people pay and gives the rest to the merchant.
The company used to report all of its gross billings, not just the money it gets to keep, as revenue. After federal regulators questioned the practice, Groupon submitted new documents in September that showed that net revenue in the first half of 2011 was about half of what it originally reported.
The company's rapid growth, financial reporting difficulties, high marketing expenses and enormous employee base have caused some IPO experts to compare its ascent to the late 1990s tech boom ? and bust.
Groupon has failed to impress investors since its market debut. It started strong, pricing above expectations at $20 and raising $700 million in its offering. Its shares soared 31 percent in its first day of trading, closing at $26.11. It has fallen 30 percent since then, closing regular trading Friday at $18.38.
The company has struggled with intense competition from other daily deal sites and complaints by merchants after they've been overwhelmed by customers using, and sometimes abusing, the company's offers.
Groupon also issued a more modest growth forecast for its first quarter as the number of subscribers signing up for its service and the number of merchants joining appears to be slowing.
The company stood by its 2012 first-quarter expectations for revenue of $510 million to $550 million. But that is still single-digit growth year-over-year when it delivered double-digit growth in every quarter of 2011.
"We remain confident in the fundamentals of our business, as our performance continues to highlight the value that we provide to customers and merchants," Groupon's Chief Financial Officer Jason Child said in a statement.
The company also said Friday that it would extend its "lockup" period one month beyond what it had set out at its IPO. These agreements restrict the sale or transfer shares held by certain stockholders, often executives in the company. The agreements also prevent key stockholders from unloading shares or flooding the market, which could hurt its price.
Groupon said that its lockup agreements were originally scheduled to expire on May 2 but the company will be reporting its earnings on May 12 and the agreement forbids the two being so close to each other. As a result, the lockup period will be automatically extended through June 1.
Shares of Groupon, based in Chicago, plunged $1.24, nearly 7 percent, in after-hours trading.

McFaul was apparently describing an encounter with a self-described NTV television crew before a meeting with a Russian human rights activist.
Footage of the encounter posted on the NTV website shows a clearly irritated but mostly smiling McFaul, coatless under a wet snow, sparring for several minutes in Russian with a woman holding a microphone who says she is from NTV.
"Your ambassador to our country walks around all the time without this. They do not interfere with his work. And you are always with me -- at home," McFaul said in the clip.
"Aren't you ashamed to do this? It is an insult to your country when you do this, do you understand that?"
He said his meeting with activist Lev Ponomaryov, whom he said he has known for 25 years, was part of his job, just like a meeting with President Dmitry Medvedev two days earlier.
Blogger Alexey Navalny, a vocal opponent of Vladimir Putin, reacted to McFaul's tweet on his own account, saying "I don't understand McFaul. He's got diplomatic immunity. He can just lawfully beat up the NTV journalists. Come on, Mike! One for all!"

two important sets of guidelines directed at improving the health and activity levels of infants and toddlers. The
Canadian Sedentary Behaviour Guidelines for the Early Years (aged 0-4 years) and the Canadian Physical Activity
Guidelines for the Early Years (aged 0-4 years) are presented in the April 2012 issue of the journal Applied Physiology,
Nutrition, and Metabolism (APNM).
"The development and publication of the first evidence-informed guidelines for the early years represents an important
public health advancement in Canada," says Mark Tremblay, Director of Healthy Active Living and Obesity Research
(HALO) at the Children's Hospital of Eastern Ontario (CHEO) Research Institute, Chair of the CSEP Guidelines Steering
Committee and lead author of the published papers. "The guidelines are based on the best available evidence, input
from researchers, clinicians and care-providers and harmonized with international initiatives."
"As leaders in physical activity, we aim to increase the Canadian public's awareness, adoption and implementation of
the new Guidelines for the Early Years," says Earl Noble, President of CSEP. "We've worked with numerous partners,
including the HALO Research Group, to develop these Guidelines. CSEP is proud to provide this scientific-based guidance
to assist promoting physical activity and discouraging sedentary behaviours in young Canadians."
Caregivers are advised to minimize the time infants, toddlers and preschoolers spend during waking hours sitting or

"Many scientists expected Mercury, being a small planet only slightly larger than the moon, to have cooled off not long after it formed and to be?essentially 'dead' for most of its evolution," said Maria Zuber of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, lead author of one of the new studies and a co-author on the other. "But it appears that Mercury had an exciting and active?middle age."

SAN FRANCISCO -- San Francisco Sheriff Ross Mirkarimi, who was sentenced on Monday in a highly publicized domestic abuse case, will not resign, his lawyers said Tuesday, The Associated Press reported.
The announcement came in the face of a reported?ultimatum from the city's mayor demanding that the newly elected sheriff step down immediately or face an official misconduct charge and possibly forced removal from office.
A longtime progressive politician in the city, Mirkarimi agreed to?a plea deal in the case involving a New Year's Eve dispute with his wife that left her arm bruised. Under the deal, he pleaded guilty to a misdemeanor "false imprisonment" charge, which allowed him to continue carrying a gun. Mirkarimi had signaled that he would remain in his post, to which he was elected in November.?
But the ultimatum reportedly issued by Mayor Ed Lee made it clear that the sheriff is?facing a serious political challenge following the?abuse case.
"I'm not aware of any plans for the sheriff to resign," the sheriff's attorney Lidia Stiglich told the AP.?"I'm disappointed it's proceeding in this fashion. I think it should be left to the voters."
The sheriff met with Lee after his sentencing Monday. During that discussion, Lee gave him 24 hours to resign or face an ethics charge that could result in his removal from office, Stiglich confirmed.
Lee has declined to comment on the matter but said he would make an announcement later Tuesday.
Mirkarimi, 50,?was sentenced to three years' probation, 52 weeks of domestic violence intervention classes, 100 hours of community service and a small fine for one misdemeanor charge of false imprisonment in a New Year's Eve incident that left his wife, Eliana Lopez, with a bruise on her arm.
Using administrative procedures to oust Mirkarimi is not a slam dunk, said Joe Eskenazi, political reporter for SF Weekly.
Under the City Charter, he noted, official misconduct is defined as "any wrongful behavior by a public officer in relation to the duties of his or her office..."

Even though Mirkarimi has admitted guilt to wrongdoing, it's hard to see it as job-related, in his view.
If city attorneys?nonetheless find a way to charge him with official misconduct, it will be a vote by the Board of Supervisors that would make the final determination.?Nine of the 11 supervisors would have to vote?in favor of his ouster for it to go through.
Even some of the sheriff's erstwhile allies hoped that he will now resign to avoid more damage, said?Eskenasi. Though he had a reputation for being?an effective member of the Board of?Supervisors, where he served for seven years prior to his 2011 election as sheriff, the domestic abuse case has made Mirkarimi toxic, he said.?
"Even people who like him would prefer to see him out and out soon," Eskenazi said. "Even people who are his ideological allies. There?s not a lot of support out there among the people you would want to have."
If he manages to remain in office as sheriff, Mirkarimi could also face a recall by San Francisco voters this summer.
As the city turns against the once promising political figure, Mirkarimi's wife is advocating for him.
"Eliana Lopez is not afraid of Ross, Eliana Lopez supports Ross," said Paula Canny, attorney for Lopez, speaking to the Chronicle. "She absolutely wants Ross to remain in office."
