Venezuelan TV channel pays $2.2 million fine

(AP) ? The Venezuelan television channel Globovision on Friday paid a fine of more than $2 million imposed by regulators, calling it an unfair penalty but saying it had no choice after the Supreme Court ordered an embargo on its assets for nonpayment.

The channel, which takes a critical stance against President Hugo Chavez's government, has been trying to challenge the fine. Broadcast regulators slapped the penalty on the channel last year for its coverage of a prolonged prison uprising.

"We came to pay the unjust and disproportionate fine," said Carlos Zuloaga, Globovision's vice president, who spoke outside the Supreme Court building with other station executives, accompanied by employees and supporters.

Globovision paid the fine a day after the Supreme Court ordered an embargo on nearly $5.7 million in assets belonging to the channel. Zuloaga said the station paid about 9.4 million bolivars, equivalent to $2.2 million.

He said the court should immediately lift the embargo order now that the fine has been paid. He noted the channel still has legal appeals pending and said Globovision "is going to continue fighting."

"We have an obligation to keep Globovision open," he said.

Telecommunications regulators last year imposed the fine against Globovision accusing it of "justifying crime," ''altering the public order" and promoting political intolerance during its coverage of an intervention by troops to quash rioting at El Rodeo prison.

The telecommunication commission's director general, Pedro Maldonado, said at the time that for four days Globovision broadcast 18 emotional reports with relatives of the prisoners and repeated them almost 300 times, adding the sound of gunfire over the reports.

The June 2011 prison riot erupted after troops raided one of two adjacent prisons looking for weapons. The raid set off gunfights that left three dead, and the standoff finally ended with negotiations after 27 days. Authorities said four inmates who escaped also were slain by soldiers.

Globovision has accused Chavez's government of trying to shut it down, and has said it did nothing wrong. Government officials have repeatedly accused the channel of violating broadcast regulations.

Press freedom groups condemned the Supreme Court's decision ordering the embargo on the channel's assets.

Reporters Without Borders called it "a dangerous precedent for freedom to report the news, given the disproportionate financial penalty that threatens the very survival of the media organization."

The Inter American Press Association similarly criticized the court's order in a statement, saying it was a "flagrant attack on press freedom."

Globovision, a 24-hour news network, provides a key outlet for opposition candidate Henrique Capriles to get out his message ahead of Venezuela's Oct. 7 presidential vote, while state television and other state-run media are largely monopolized by coverage of Chavez's appearances and other government events.

Globovision has been the only stridently anti-Chavez channel on the air in Venezuela since another opposition-aligned station, RCTV, was forced off cable and satellite TV in 2010. RCTV had been booted off the open airwaves in 2007 when the government refused to renew its broadcast license.

Paes confirms participation in London Olympics

New Delhi: Leander Paes on Friday confirmed that he will play in London Olympics and has agreed to pair with any team the All India Tennis Association (AITA) chooses.

"It is my dream to be part of my sixth Olympics and I will not let petty politics come in the way of hard work and good tennis," Paes said. Moreover the 1996 bronze medal winner stated that he won't to react to anything said earlier.

Paes confirmation to CNN-IBN comes after three days Sania Mirza wrote a letter showing her displeasure regarding the ongoing tennis fiasco.

Paes said despite being left disheartened he is focussed on playing sport and not politics.

The 39-year-old had threatened to withdraw from the Olympics despite being India' number one doubles player after being paired with a much lower-ranked Vishnu Vardhan for the big event. Paes' partners of choice -- Mahesh Bhupathi and Rohan Bopanna -- refused to combine with him and insisted on being sent as a team themselves.

On Sania's outburst, Paes refused any direct comment, saying, "Every Olympics has some nonsense coming in with it."

"I know how much hard work goes into what I do. (Either) people choose to respect it, which I'm very lucky that India does, (or) people choose to disrespect. That's their problem, not mine," Paes said.

Paes, set to make a record sixth Olympic appearance, said he would look to help Vardhan, who would be making Games' debut in London.

"I don't even know if he has grass-court shoes. So it's a bit of a tough one. But he's a really good kid, I'm happy to play with him.

"Whatever the obstacles are, which I see are going to be many -- he's never been to Wimbledon before -- whatever I can do as an experienced professional athlete to help my partners out, I do," he said.

The Supreme Court?s decision on the Obama health care law hasn?t changed the view of religious groups that oppose some of its provisions.

Both the Becket Fund for Religious Liberty and the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops issued statements saying Thursday?s decision didn?t address their? First Amendment concerns and other worries about the law. A big issue is a requirement that most employers provide contraceptive services at no cost to employees as part of their health insurance plans.

At the Becket Fund, a public interest law firm, senior counsel Hannah Smith said the organization?s lawsuits representing three schools and a Christian broadcaster, will continue. ?The court?s opinion today did not decide the issues in our cases,? Ms. Smith said. ?We are challenging the Health and Human Services mandate on religious liberty grounds which are not part of today?s decision.?

Nearly two dozen lawsuits have been filed seeking expansion of the conscience protection provisions of the regulations carrying out the 2010 law.

She said the contraceptive requirement would force ?individuals to violate their deeply held religious beliefs or pay a severe fine, a fine which could force many homeless shelters, charities, and religious institutions to shut their doors.?

?

The U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops, which has raised its own set of concerns about the law, urged Congress to fix it.? It cited three areas of concern: the HHS mandate on birth control,? use of federal funds to pay for elective abortions, and unfair treatment of illegal immigrants because they would be excluded from buying health insurance in the new exchanges that are being set up.

As I drive around Cork and pull up behind trucks and vans one of the first things I ?look for of course is their website address. ?I literally have nearly crashed into the backs of some of them. ?having your website on your vans, paperwork and all visible items makes a big difference for and possible new business. ?You may often see vans parked at the side of the road with their sides placed prominently. ?They do this as it is free?advertising. ?I am not a big fan of it to be honest as it can be a distraction but it does stick in some peoples minds.

I think some people just buy the vans to have them placed at strategic locations.

There are still however tons of businesses who either don?t have a website or haven?t put it on their vans. ?If you don?t have a website maybe it is because you think it is a difficult process to get a website name. ?It isn?t and all you need is a credit or debit card and 15 minutes in front of a PC.

Which Type of Website Address Do I Choose?

As was mentioned in the?Getting Irish Business Online??post recently a large majority of these businesses have opted for the .com domain name over the .ie.

  • A .com domain is one like www.irishtimes.com
  • A .ie domain is like www.rte.ie

In the first instance it costs more for a .ie and more importantly it takes a little longer as the IEDR (Irish Domain Registry) require that your prove ownership before you can get the domain.. ?To create a .com you don?t need to prove ownership of the business name and once someone else doesn?t own the domain name you can get it quite quickly.

So the .coms are winning but the steps to get a .ie shouldnt put you of as it nice to have the Irish TLD.

Sadly when it comes to email addresses it seems that what I see on the back of these businesses vans as I edge closer is that many still have the dreaded eircom.net address and I saw a .iol.ie one the other day.

If you have hosting then it is not a big deal to create a custom email address for your domain and it does look so much more professional.

The Rest of You

There are still a lot of businesses who don?t have an internet presence or at least haven?t put it in their van (stickers anyone?) and it is perfectly understandable as it can be an obstacle for businesses who don?t understand the process and benefits to arriving at a well designed, marketed and publicised website. ?The first of course isn?t enough and I showed this in my recent slideshare.

Your average Joe or Mary Soap in Cork are busy business people and there is a lack of good resources explaining as opposed to selling the benefits of a website presence. ?There is an intuitive feeling that it might help (it often doesn?t) but the skill set of website designers is often lacking in showing this as they believe passionately in the product and not the purpose of it.

As website designers today there is an onus on those who don?t already have the skills to up skill in presentation delivery, marketing and?knowledge?of how the whole internet landscape is going. ?Your end customer will appreciate that you are not just a website delivery mechanism but a company and person who delivers solutions.

(AP) ? NASCAR points leader Matt Kenseth, one of the longest-tenured drivers in the series, is leaving Roush Fenway Racing at the end of the season.

He will be replaced in the No. 17 Ford ? the car he has driven for all but one of his 452 career starts ? by Nationwide Series champion Ricky Stenhouse Jr. and Kenseth's long relationship with Ford will apparently come to an end. He is believed to be headed to Joe Gibbs Racing, either in Joey Logano's No. 20 Toyota or a fourth unannounced team.

Why? Good question. The team offered no answers in the sudden divorce of one of NASCAR's longest active relationships. Only Jeff Gordon, with Hendrick Motorsports since 1993, has been with his team longer than Kenseth has been with Jack Roush.

"I'd like to thank Matt Kenseth for his many years of loyal service," co-owner Roush said Tuesday. "Matt has been an integral part of this organization for well over a decade, and we are extremely appreciative of his accomplishments and contributions to the team, and will always consider him a part of the Roush Fenway family."

Kenseth and teammate Greg Biffle are ranked 1st and 2nd in the Sprint Cup Series, clearly poised to make a run at the championship. Kenseth opened the season with his second Daytona 500 victory, and has 11 top-10 finishes through 16 races.

Kenseth did not respond to a request for comment on Tuesday, but tweeted about his departure.

"I'm very thankful to Jack Roush for the opportunities he's given me over the past 14 years. Together we have enjoyed a lot of success," he posted. "And as a team we are committed as ever to the remainder of the 2012 season and chasing a 3rd sprint cup title for Jack and RFR."

With Roush, Kenseth has built a career worthy of Hall of Fame consideration. Besides the wins at Daytona, he has won 22 Cup races overall, and the 2003 championship. In the Nationwide Series, Kenseth has won 26 races driving for Roush.

His relationship with current general manager Robbie Reiser, like Kenseth a native of Wisconsin, dates at least to 1997, when Kenseth first drove Reiser's No. 17 entry. It was eventually merged into the Roush organization, and Reiser became Kenseth's crew chief at Roush in 2000, Kenseth's rookie season.

"Matt and I broke into this sport together, learned the ropes and were able to bring home a championship," Reiser said. "Over the 20 years we have worked with each other, Matt has been a fierce competitor and become a close friend, not only for me, but as a mentor to young drivers like Ricky. I wish Matt nothing but the best for the next phase of his career, and know that we'll remain close."

There was speculation last weekend at Sonoma that Kenseth was leaving to join JGR, which is in a contract year with Logano. The team also has room to expand to a fourth car, and it is possible Gibbs officials are trying to move Kenseth in and keep Logano at the same time.

Team president J.D. Gibbs did not respond to a request for a comment Tuesday, and said at Sonoma he could not talk about Kenseth.

Jamie Allison, director of Ford Racing, said the blue oval brand is was disappointed Kenseth is leaving.

"He will be certainly missed by us and the Ford Racing fans," Allison said. "We are thankful for Matt's winning efforts and championship-caliber success with the Roush and Ford racing programs these past 16 years, both on and off the track. We will focus on this year and look forward to more success on the track in his No. 17 Ford Fusion this season."

Kenseth's car has had sponsorship woes the last few years, and Roush is funding a large portion of this year's schedule himself for the 40-year-old Kenseth. The organization dropped David Ragan and its fourth team because of a lack of sponsorship at the end of last season, and also ponied up significant money to re-sign Carl Edwards last season. Roush also signed Biffle to a contract extension last season.

The team desperately needs a slot for the 24-year-old Stenhouse, who is locked into a long-term contract but has nowhere to go in Roush's Cup lineup. The organization has a similar problem with 2011 Daytona 500 winner Trevor Bayne, who is also in a long-term contract and had his Nationwide Series team shuttered earlier this season because of no funding.

Stenhouse will be far cheaper than Kenseth in terms of salary, and he is much younger and clearly has a future with the organization.

"We feel that he is not only a key piece of our team's future, but a key piece of the future of the sport," Roush said of Stenhouse. "Roush Fenway is an organization with a wonderful past and present, as well as an extremely promising future, and I can't think of a better candidate than Ricky to usher in the next era of success for the team."

It's unusual, though, for a team and driver to decide to part ways during a championship run. Roush technically has three shots at the Sprint Cup title, as Biffle has proven to be just as strong as Kenseth this season. And Edwards, who tied Tony Stewart last year for the championship but lost the title on a tie-breaker, could still qualify for the 12-driver Chase for the Sprint Cup championship field.

Roush, meanwhile, doesn't think Kenseth's departure will hurt the No. 17 team's championship hopes.

"The No. 17 is positioned extremely well this season, and I'm committed to providing the team the best resources to continue their run for the 2012 championship," he said. "I have no doubt that Matt will do his part."

Kris Humphries' Legal Team To Subpoena Kanye's Ex Amber Rose ...

Kris Humphries is going to subpoena Kanye West's ex-girlfriend, Amber Rose, because she has previously claimed that the hip hop superstar and reality TV star hooked up several years ago and not recently as Kim has claimed; meanwhile, the NBA star's deposition is taking place right now in Minnesota, RadarOnline.com is exclusively reporting.

As we previously reported, Rose claimed earlier this year, before West and Kardashian went public with their romance, that Kim tried to steal Kanye from her. They were both cheating," Amber, 28, tells Star exclusively. "They were both cheating on me and Reggie with each other...Kim is one of the main reasons why me and Kanye are not together," Amber told Star Magazine via RadarOnline.com. "She's a homewrecker!"

Kris legal team "will absolutely be issuing a subpoena for Amber Rose to be deposed because she has very relevant information and could contradict Kim's timeline about when she and Kanye West became romantically involved. Kris' team hasn't spoken to Amber yet, but they are hopeful that she will be a cooperative witness. If Kris' lawyers determine she will be a hostile witness, they will still depose her because they just want to get to the truth," a source close to the situation tells us.

Meanwhile, Humphries deposition is being conducted in Minnesota right now. "The deposition is expected to go all day, and Kim's lawyer, Laura Wasser, had to trek from Los Angeles to the midwest for the deposition, and it could last for at least two days.? Kim isn't at the deposition, although she could have chosen to be there. Kim's deposition will be taking place in the next ten days in Los Angeles, and Kris' lawyer, Lee Hutton, will go to California for it," an insider tells us.

Also being deposed in the bitter divorce battle will be Kim's ex-boyfriend, Reggie Bush and current love interest Kanye West.

After all depositions are completed, a date for the divorce trial will be set. Kim and Kris' depositions are being vieo taped.

A rep for Kris Humphries had no comment, and his lawyer didn't immediately respond to request for comment.
