Former Gibson County Mayor Behind Bars

Former Oakland City Mayor Alfred Cooper, Sr. is in jail after being arrested Saturday. It happened at the Oakland City Golf Course where witnesses say Cooper caused a scene at a private fundraising event.

Witnesses say what started as a a night out for a good cause -- ended in a 'fall from grace' for the former Oakland City mayor. Cooper is facing a long list of charges after witnesses say he got violent and out of hand.

Resident Luke McCandless says he saw former Oakland City Mayor Alfred Cooper headbutt a security guard when the man tried to stop Cooper from attacking his wife. "When he headbutted him I could hear it -- you know -- CRACK," says McCandless. "For him to lash out like that and to headbutt an officer, ya know, hard telling what he would have done to anybody else. To me, a little kid, his wife, you know, anybody there. It's hard to say what he would have done."

A probable cause affidavit says cooper hit his son and aggressively pulled his wife by her wrist at a fundraiser. "He was trying to get one of? them to hurt them," says McCandless. "They acted glad that he was in custody and getting what he deserved."

The former mayor's family refused to talk about the incident, greeting our attempt to get an interview with verbal and physical aggression.

Neighbors say they were stunned Cooper was arrested. "I'm shocked really. Cause I've never seen him like that before," says Michelle Dunn, who adds that she has never seen Cooper raise his voice.

"It's really hard to believe Alfred would do that," says John McGillem. He says he's never had an issue with his neighbor.

McCandless says he was shocked too. "I've never seen or heard of him doing anything like that before so I really don't know what go into him," says McCandless. "Evidently he was intoxicated and I would never have expected him to do something like that knowing he just got out of the mayor position a couple months ago."

"It was an upset to a lot of people you know to see that go on," says McCandless. He says the event was a family function where children were present -- and he believes that makes the incident worse.????

A fall from grace? Some say it is a disgrace for the community. "It was totally uncalled for," says McCandless. "It ruined it probably for a lot of people that night."

The former mayor faces charges of domestic battery, battery resulting in injury, resisting arrest by fighting, public intoxication and disorderly conduct. Cooper remains in the Gibson County jail. He appears in court July 17.
