Mission: Impossible - Ghost Protocol did big business for Paramount, so it's hardly mind-blowing that the studio is keen to keep the franchise rolling along with an installment every other year or so. However, Brad Bird will not be returning to the series he rejuvenated (he's directing the mysterious, Damon Lindelof-scripted 1952 for Disney), so the studio, its various producers, which still includes?Tom Cruise?and?J.J. Abrams, have been hunting for a new person to call the shots. Now it seems they've found one in Christopher McQuarrie.
McQuarrie isn't exactly known for directing massive blockbusters on Mission: Impossible's scale (his most well-known credit is for winning a Best Original Screenplay Oscar for The Usual Suspects), but he's warming up to. He directed Jack Reacher, which just so happened to star Tom Cruise, and just so happens to be a Paramount film as well. And while the rest of us won't be able to see what he did with his adaptation of the Lee Child novel One Shot until it comes out on December 21, apparently all involved are mighty pleased with the work.
Reportedly the studio is waiting to select some writers before?it makes it official, but McQuarrie isn't just on the top of a short list; he is the list. So, unless something drastic changes in the next few months (for example, if Jack Reacher bombs hard), expect him at the helm of secret agent Ethan Hunt's next globe-trotting adventure.
