Women face celluloid ceiling in U.S. film industry, study finds

(Reuters) - Women lag far behind men in reaching the top jobs in the film business as a study on Tuesday found only 9 percent of directors of the top 250 grossing Hollywood films in 2012 were women - the same level as 15 years ago.

The figures from the Center for the Study of Women in Television and Film at San Diego State University were released a month ahead of the Oscars, where no women have made the shortlist for best director.

"Zero Dark Thirty" is the only movie nominated for a best picture award to have been directed by a woman - Oscar-winning Kathryn Bigelow who was the first and still only female director to win the best director award, in 2010, for "The Hurt Locker." Bigelow was not nominated this year in the best director category

Martha Lauzen, executive director of the Center for the Study of Women in Television and Film, said the number of women directors of top films was up from 5 percent in 2011 but back at the same level as in 2008 and even 15 years ago.

She said the percentages had bounced between 5 percent and 9 percent for the past 15 years with the exception of 2000 when women accounted for 11 percent of directors.

"The bottom line is that the percentage of women directors has been declining for the last 5 years," Lauzen told Reuters.

She said women's representation in key positions in the film industry was important not only as an employment issue but also as a larger cultural issue as people tended to gravitate to creative projects that reflected their own personal reality.

"If (white) men are directing the vast majority of our films, the majority of those films will be about (white) males from a (white) male point of view," said Lauzen.

"Increasingly, this perspective does not reflect the community of filmmakers in this country or the community of moviegoers."

The survey found that in 2012, women made up 18 percent of directors, executive producers, producers, writers, cinematographers, and editors working on the top 250 U.S. grossing films. This was unchanged from 2011 and an increase of 1 percentage point from 1998.

Women were most likely to work in the documentary, drama, and animated film genres. They were least likely to work in the action, horror and sci-fi genres.

A second survey released this week by the Sundance Institute and Women in Film Los Angeles also found women lagged men in the industry, but the numbers were not as bad in the independent film world.

The survey found women made up 29.8 percent of 11,197 directors, writers, producers, cinematographers and editors on films between 2002 to 2012 at the Sundance Film Festival in Utah, the world's leading showcase for independent film.

"This data shows us that there is a higher representation of female filmmakers in independent film as compared to Hollywood - but it also highlights the work that is still to be done for women to achieve equal footing in the field," Cathy Schulman, president of Women In Film Los Angeles, said in a statement.

Film industry professionals, many of them women, suggested to organizers of the survey that steps to address the "celluloid ceiling" could include mentoring and encouraging early career women, improving access to finance and raising awareness of the problem.

Spin Cycle: The Social Realm of the Laundromat

Photo licensed under CC. Click on image for license and information.

Sunday afternoons should never be spent in a laundromat if you can avoid it. One of the outcomes of our recent move is that I went from having my own washer and dryer to having a washer that floods the basement and a landlord who isn?t inclined to fixing it. That means I?ve had to spend some time getting reacquainted with coin-operated laundromats?and their particular social nuances.

Clean clothes are a luxury

In places where access to water is an issue, laundry means either bringing water into your home (maybe using buckets or pots) or traveling to a water source. It?s labor intensive and time consuming. And if getting water for laundry is an issue, then it?s also likely an issue for bathing, cooking, and drinking. Given those needs, laundry drops to the bottom of the list as a priority. However, once you can meet those water needs, laundry becomes important because having clean clothes is a sign of social status. It places you within the boundaries of being socially acceptable.

The most basic means of cleaning clothing is to wet them and beat them against a rock. It gets the job done, but doesn?t do much to preserve the life of the fabric. Before indoor plumbing, washboards were fairly common. They were basically a framed ribbed surface that you could rub wet clothes against. It got your clothes clean without reducing them to shreds. But this still meant hours of work?and that was before waiting for the drying to complete.

While washing machines have been around since the late 18th-century, they were largely hand and steam operated, and still required a fair amount of attention from the user. It was only when electric washers began to appear in the early 20th-century, that a more mechanically-guided process became a possibility.

In the United States, the popularity of washing machines rose steadily until the Great Depression hit which put the cost of a washing machine beyond the reach of many people. However, it opened the door for laundromats which allegedly took hold at this time because people who could no longer count on a washing machine, could use the laundromat. Hopeful entrepreneurs purchased washers and began the practice of renting them. Users could deposit coins into the machines to purchase their use for a period of time. Unlike commercial enterprises, which had been around for some time, laundromats were geared specifically to individual users who were solely responsible for the operation of the machine during their rental period.

Following the Great Depression, washing machines were once more pursued as a desirable household appliance. However, the laundromat never quite disappeared. They provide an alternative to having to own your own machines, and put clean clothes within relative reach of many people. Laundromats weren?t just for people without the means of purchasing machines, they provided a degree of convenience.

The code of the laundromat

For most of my early teen years we were renters, which meant that part of my weekend was spent helping my mom do laundry. I hated it. It was two or three hours spent in a space that smelled damp?like a moldy dishwasher?trying not to let strangers see my underwear (I was fourteen; I didn?t want anyone to see my underwear) and making sure no one stole our detergent. My biggest worry was that something would be left behind in the commotion of transferring clothes from the washer to the dryers to the folding tables. And it came true: a favorite blue sweatshirt went MIA during this time, and I?m sure it fell victim to the laundromat. In any case, we bought a house when I entered by midteens and my life took me away from the coin-operated laundromat. Until last month. And it seems the some things have not changed:

  • Never, ever, ever go on a Sunday afternoon. Friday nights are bad too, as are late Saturday afternoons. Everyone wants in, and there?s a line for dryers, and double-washers. You?ll have to negotiate or be prepared to aggressively claim the machines you?ll need.
  • Children will not be supervised. They?ll run laps around the laundromat, yelling at the top of their lungs. Or they?ll ride in the laundry carts and use them as bumper cars, in which case you?d better be on alert so you aren?t involved in any accidents. They also have a tendency to try to climb into dryers and you?ll run the risk of getting chastised by a harried parent if you say something.
  • Protect your underwear. People are watching, particularly if those people are teenage boys who have yet to see lingerie in real life.
  • Your detergent matters. Are you bringing your detergent or buying it from the vending machine? What brand are you using? Do you have dryer sheets? Hangers? You will be judged on the brand of detergent you use?and the extras you bring you to the laundromat. These things all change the way you are treated by laundry regulars?and and whether you?ll likely fall victim to laundry fishers who are waiting for your attention to waiver (we?ll talk about them more in a bit).

There is a hierarchy that exists at the laundromat. It?s a complicated system where rank is issued by degree of regularity, products used, and the ability to commandeer as many carts as you need.

Regular patrons know which machines to use and which to avoid. They?re familiar with the attendant and with each other. They may get access to bathroom facilities that others do not. They?ll keep an eye on each other?s machines and supply additional quarters for each other?s dryers (which are paid back) if the owner is not present. They?re the ones to stop bored children from riding in carts or from climbing into dryers?at least without repercussion.

The status of regular patrons is enhanced if they bring their own laundry supplies. It suggests preparedness and efficiency: they?re there to get in and out. And if those supplies expand beyond laundry detergent, that status is enhanced because it demonstrates (1) having the means of obtaining additional supplies and (2) an understanding of how to enhance your laundry experience.

Laundry carts are a form social currency as well. You have to be able to claim at least one or else you?ll not only find it difficult to transport wet clothes to the dryer, but you may find that your laundry supplies vanish when you aren?t looking. The cart gives you a temporary space that you can claim as your own. Within this space, you can store laundry supplies and transport your clothing without worry. The more carts you can claim, the more ?space? you can claim, which forces others to find ways to work around you.

Watchful washing

The laundromat also makes public something that has become somewhat private. Personal washing machines and dryers take dirty clothes out of the public eye. Dryers mean that you don?t have to wait for your clothes to dry, but they also mean that you don?t have to air your laundry (so to speak). Whatever you choose to wear, it can be cleaned and dried within the private confines of your home.

Because you are sharing facilities at the laundromat, people may pay more attention to what others have to wash. For example, if someone puts something particularly soiled into a machine, you might not want to be the next person to use that machine. We?re far more aware of the possibility of contamination in this environment; we?re faced with the need to ?protect? our possessions to the best of our ability?and that means watching.

But all that watching can leave you feeling exposed. Clothes are public markers of who we are. The ways in which they get dirty can also be telling. As can fabric patterns and qualities. When worn, clothes are a form of armor. However, as limp, sodden pieces of cloth, they can expose our vulnerabilities: blood from a cut, a tear from a fall, and a stain from a harried lunch are all revealing in how we interact with the world.

Contamination and exposure aren?t the only concern. The public nature of the laundromat means that anyone can walk in off of the street and wait for the right opportunity to claim unwatched clothing. Last week a pair of women came in during the bustle of the Sunday afternoon laundry crush and began opening dryers, apparently feeling the clothing inside to see if it was dry. Under the cover of a busy Sunday afternoon, their behavior wasn?t suspicious?until another woman confronted them as they were putting clothes into a laundry bag. They had taken a load of her clothes from the dryer and were preparing to take it with them. ?It wasn?t an accident,? explained the laundromat attendant. ?Some people fish the laundromat to freshen up their closet.? That is to say, they come in and take a gamble with a load of unwatched clothes. They can redistribute anything that doesn?t fit.

Suddenly as boring as it is to watch the spin cycle, it seems like it might be worth it?if you watch closely enough, you might learn something new about yourself.

Take Yourself To The Next Level With These Self Improvement Tips ...

How about taking a few minutes of your time in order to learn simple steps on improving the rest of your life? If you pay attention to what we have to say, that is what this article can do for you. Read the tips and tricks that we have provided for you, so that you can start to reach your true potential.

Don?t look at your outside beauty; seek out inner beauty. Wearing the latest styles or looking like a movie star does not make a real difference. Your personality will be what matters in the long run. Try and change the person you are inside rather than focusing on the outside.

Identify what is keeping you from being successful. Doing this is extremely hard for a lot of people. The first step in dealing with our weaknesses is actually identifying them. Your future will look much brighter if you acquire new strengths.

TIP! Set realistic goals that you can accomplish, and you?ll enjoy life so much more. Figure out what you do and do not do well, and you will learn a lot about yourself.

When working on your self improvement, it is often helpful to see what others have done. You can avoid both personal and business mistakes by knowing the trials that others have faced. Knowing that other people have succeeded at the same goal will make it seem more attainable to you.

It isn?t possible to care for someone else at your own expense. No matter your path, or whether you?re failing or thriving, take time out to restore and rest yourself.

Prospective employers will be more concerned as to whether you can do the job well. There are only very few exceptions to this rule, such as working with a large financial institution. It is really more important to simply have a quality degree that will open up opportunities for you.

TIP! Change should be a conscious choice, and is in fact a result of it. We need to choose the change if we expect to really grow.

Emergency Fund

Begin a fund for emergency purposes. Many people think that a credit card counts as an emergency fund. By putting aside only a few dollars each week, you can rapidly build a respectable emergency fund. These reserves can be of great assistance now and in the future, because the amount owed will drop, rather than build.

Leadership is essential in your personal development. Although there are many different definitions of leadership, the most common being ?influence?. Examine yourself as a leader. Think about the circumstances that have had the most influence in your life. What changes did those events bring forth in you? What do you feel makes you a good team player? By knowing yourself and your motives better, you can more easily integrate into a leadership role with others.

TIP! Fostering a strict sense of self discipline is a great way to improve yourself. Your body yearns to give into temptations, but you can control the desires with practice.

You can be unnecessarily stressed if you overact to situations. Think about the situation, and try to find constructive ways to deal with it. If a mistake is the issue, there are ways to correct it or cope with living with your mistake. When you start feeling anxious about a situation, focus on the positive things, not the negative ones.

Follow your own principles as strictly as you can. Your personal beliefs create the foundation for who you are. If you have good reason to have these beliefs, you will feel more confident and grow your self esteem by adhering to these beliefs and principles. This will also promote consistency in your life and actions, which is a trait almost everyone finds admirable.

Begin a special savings for emergencies. Most of us depend on credit cards to pay for unexpected expenses. All you will need to do is save a couple of dollars per week. This fund will help you stay out of debt if you have to face an emergency.

TIP! Your willpower can help you find more positive things in your life. Your attitude towards others will affect what happens to you.

Regular Exercise

Exercise even if you are at your ideal weight. There are many other benefits from regular exercise. For instance, regular exercise is a great way to boost your mood.

You should shoot to be the best at whatever it is that you do. Follow your passion to the greatest possible aspirations. You can?t be the best at everything, but you can inspire people in the same field as you. Enhance your standing in your niche, and your self-esteem will climb too.

TIP! Part of setting goals to better yourself is having an idea of where you want your life to go. Having long-term goals is great, because you could have a big change in your perspective.

When you are actively trying to improve yourself, failing to do well at something can hurt your self-esteem more than it otherwise would. However, failure is really an opportunity to grow as a person. Failure is only another way of learning about your strengths and weaknesses. Look at failure as another opportunity for you to improve and overcome.

As hard as it may seem, you must eliminate worry from your life. Most of the things you worry about never materialize, and creating them in the present is of no value to your self improvement. Instead of worrying, consider the worst case scenario, and start taking concrete steps to address that worst case. You will then be prepared and able to move forward.

One simple step to your personal development is doing things for the benefit of other people. You can cultivate a strong, positive character, by learning how to make sacrifices for the sake of helping others. When making sacrifices that help others without hurting your well-being, you can become that kind person that you wanted to be.

TIP! Often, the enemy of happiness is stress. When our minds are busy dealing with stress, we are causing damage to our entire body, both mentally and physically.

Try to make each day more excellent than the previous one. Discover innovative ways to increase your character development. Focus on a specific task that you want to do better today than yesterday.

Staying positive takes a lot of willpower and it might mean that if you are positive towards others, then good things will come to you. For this reason, it is important to wish only positive things for the people in your life. You are less likely to get burdened with bad feelings if you are striving to stay positive.

Are you having a difficult time meeting someone that you want to share your life with? Use the net to jump start your search. Almost half of all couples, about 40%, met their partner online. You may find one that is looking for someone like you. There are advantages and disadvantages to both.

TIP! Sexual capitol is an important new trait that?s being researched. This means using your charm rather than your sexuality to acquire things you want.

Therapy might be beneficial if your problems are severe. Books that teach self help are helpful, but do not contain the one-on-one personal touch you can get from a therapist. Sometimes, simply talking through your problems can help you conquer them. Reading even the best self-help book cannot start up a back-and-forth dialog, the way a therapy session can.

Seek out those with similar positive attitudes. This will reinforce the aspects of your personality that you are seeking to develop, while allowing you to distance yourself from toxic individuals in your life.

Everybody makes mistakes, and making healthy food choices is definitely one field in which mistakes get made. Admit your poor choices, and move on with your life.

TIP! Failure at some task can seem like a devastating injury to your self confidence. However, failure is really an opportunity to grow as a person.

There is no way to make everyone in your life happy, so it is best to focus on first pleasing yourself. This doesn?t mean that you should only think of yourself, but in some cases, you really need to put yourself first. Whatever you do, make sure you follow your own values. The more you are a person who you like and respect, the happier you?ll be.

This information is so great that you probably are itching to not only put it into practice for yourself but share it with your loved ones, too. Diligently applying the suggestions in this article can generate positive changes you?ll enjoy for the entirety of your life. When you dedicate the time and determination to making serious personal change, the benefits are endless.

Do not overdo it when you are trying to achieve your personal development goal. Take your best shot, but know when you have reached your limit. You need to be careful about your physical health even while you are striving to achieve your goals. You will not be able to continue improving yourself if you don?t take care of your body.

TIP! Always have the attitude that you are worth it when working on your personal development plan. You need to be aware that you owe that to yourself.

Movie Review: 'Mama,' and 'The Last Stand' - Herndon, VA Patch

January. Everyone knows it is when the mediocre to the truly awful hobble off to die a quick death?after beating each other senseless for a quick buck in the box office arena. When a film gets slated for release it is because there are no other contenders to fight for those dollars, or it won't survive any other time anyway.?

After all, everyone with any sense is scrambling to see the Oscar nominees. So one approaches January movies with a mix of optimism and dread. Two genre-specific movies are being released this week. If you are a fan of horror or ultra-violent action flicks, the studios are expecting you to gravitate away from those Oscar-nominated and towards these unproven offerings.?

The Last Stand is a "comeback" vehicle for Arnold Schwarzenegger directed by Korean auteur Jee-woon Kim in his first American film. Mama is produced by Guillermo Del Toro, offering a feature-length version of director Andres Muschietti's impressive terror-filled short of the same name, and stars box office and indie darling Jessica Chastain.?

While both movies have their strengths, they both fall significantly short of filmgoers' expectations, and neither rise far above the usual January fare.?
Mama is respectably creepy but uneven from the start, and ultimately unsatisfying and muddled.?The Last Stand, which should be far more ashamed of itself,? amounts to just so much NRA porn. ?

The film Mama starts off well enough. Nikolaj Coster-Waldau plays a husband who snaps, killing his wife and running away with his two small daughters, whom he intends to kill as well. The something or someone who (surprise! ?not a spoiler as it's in the trailer) kills him instead, leaves his kids alone in a cabin to fend for themselves.?

Five years later, they are discovered subsisting on cherries and bark, and placed with his (it is assumed, but not stated) twin brother, also played, the script allows, in true soap-opera fashion, by Coster-Waldau. His bass-playing, rock and roll girlfriend played by Chastain, sporting a black-dyed blunt cut, heavy mascara, and band tats, is expected to dutifully fall in as foster mom. ?

Did something unearthly come to live with them and these now creepy, grunting, feral kids? The rest of the movie seeks to answer that question and why. It too often stumbles into the world of cliches to maintain the arty European horror aesthetic that is clearly its inspiration and aspiration. Fans of Del Toro expecting something in line with the modern classics he directed, Cronos or The Devil's Backbone, might be vaguely satisfied at first but will find too little tension building and too little story evolving to place it in the same cinematic strata.? ?

There has been a movement lately of A list actors taking on horror roles that offer more diversity to their filmography, and sometimes it pays off in a great fresh new take on an old ghost or murder story. The trouble is if a movie wants to play in the big pool with the big boys, it has to have enough water. By the inexplicable ending, this one dries up like a desiccated moth, many live ones of which are batting their creepy quivering wings on the camera, close up, throughout the film. ?

Chastain is Mama's brightest spot, usurping attention from the two surprisingly compelling child actors. She exposes her character's fears, showing us an arc from reticence to acceptance of motherhood. The audience is witness to her self-discovery, which keeps us rooting through scenes that were written more compellingly in ghost movies like The Woman in White, The Innocents?and its remake, The Others. ?

Coster-Waldau (Game of Thrones), whom I've loved as an actor since the great Danish thriller Nightwatch and the pre-vamp fad vamp show New Amsterdam, does his best with very little screen time, much of which is spent in thanklessly trite action. Too bad, because I still expect great things from him. It is Chastain who creates, in the audience, compassion and a desire to see them survive to become a family living in safety and love. ?

By the time the ending blasts onto the screen, we've been creeped but cliched out. What might have been a great twist is wasted. Back to the drawing board for all those involved. No harm, no foul. For a passible diversion and a bit of a scare, it will do. Is that worth $12? You decide.

Far more troubling, is the mind-numbingly violent bigotfest The Last Stand.? This vehicle for Arnold Schwarzenegger's comeback has him holding big guns and spouting one liners again, which he does with affable aplomb. To say that he is one of the better aspects of the movie is a more terrifying proposition than anything in Mama. ?

Director Kim Ji-woon's stylized take on a blood-soaked action-er has its charms.? He uses lovely camera angles, inventive lighting and interestingly composed shots, especially during car chase scenes and showdowns in which he obviously wishes to evoke a topsy turvy '80s version of High Noon. ?

The script is so full of cliched dialogue, it made Cinema Siren want to start a petition to ban the lines "Let's DO this!" "You wanna play? Let's play!" and "Game ON!" from films in the future.?

The representation of Latino and Latina characters is shockingly one-dimensional.? The drug cartel jokes about border control, the reluctant deputy whines about getting involved, and the arc written for the female agent taken hostage will likely equally puzzle and piss off most women in the audience. I am going to ignore the fact that Forest Whitaker is in this film. I love him and always will, no matter what movies he inexplicably chooses to support with his monumental talent.

As to violence, it goes way too far. By the time the movie is over, the audience will feel like they've been through war. So many secondary characters get shot in the head, it's like we are all sitting in the back of Vince and Jules' brain splattered car in Pulp Fiction.

Most troubling is the violent extremes the film goes to, without any substantive reason. At one point, a large group of policemen get machine gunned to death. ?While censorship in movies is the last thing Cinema Siren supports, it is valid to ask why filmmakers feel it's OK to show a whole stationhouse full of policemen riddled? by machine gun bullets. If children are still sacred in film, why are policemen the new and acceptable sacrificial lambs? We should perhaps question the necessity to use that particular circumstance as a plot device to manipulate the audience's sympathy. ?

This movie does gun lobbyists proud. There is even a gun-toting grandma who gets into the action. The audience laughed. Maybe you will, too. Maybe you don't mind a body count in the dozens, with blood splatter becoming as ubiquitous as the cliched one-liners. As for myself and any discerning movie fans, let me suggest there are less offensive flicks starring Scharzenegger on Netflix. This movie doesn't deserve your dollars. ?

This is Cinema Siren guiding you through a sea of celluloid. Listen. It's January.? Pace yourselves. There will be plenty of great, empty-headed films waiting for you come Memorial Day. For now, either venture out to one of the great movies nominated for Oscars:?Argo, Lincoln, Beasts of the Southern Wild, Life of Pi, or Zero Dark Thirty, or stay home, and see an old action classic.? ?

There is plenty to keep you busy until the Oscars on Feb. 24. Until then, the less blood splatter and moth flutter, the happier I suspect you'll be.?

Family Tree: A City of Immigrants | Historic Indianapolis | All Things ...

Whether they came from Germany, Ireland, Asia, or South America, odds are that at least some of your ancestors were immigrants. People came from all over the world to settle in Indiana, and they did so for a variety of reasons. Regardless of their country of origin, in order to become United States citizens, they all had to go through the process of naturalization.

Indiana Naturalization Certificate

Naturalization Certificate for German-born Eli Jacobs, via the Indiana Historical Society

The earliest naturalization records in Indiana date to 1807. Throughout the years various county courts handled naturalization proceedings. Even the Indiana Supreme Court naturalized people for a time. The process required foreign born peoples to follow a two-step process. They first had to file a declaration of intent to become naturalized, then file a petition for naturalization. Once their petition was approved, they received a certificate that granted them citizenship. The entire process took several years.

Before 1906, only men were required to file for naturalization. Women were not required to file until 1922. Before this time, they either became citizens automatically when their husbands were naturalized or by marrying a U.S. citizen. Likewise, children were automatically granted citizenship along with their fathers.

In 1926 a federal law was passed that made naturalization a matter for the federal district courts. Most counties stopped filing naturalization paperwork soon after.

Naturalization records filed in the state of Indiana are in the process of being transferred to the State Archives. There is currently an searchable index available online for those records that have already been transferred and processed. If you?re searching for your Indiana immigrant relatives, this database is the best place to start.

For later naturalization records that were filed with the federal courts, you must contact the National Archives. Files for this region are located at the Great Lakes Branch in Chicago.

Metamaterial camera needs no lens, could herald cheaper imaging tech

http://www.engadget.com/2013/01/18/metamaterial-imaging-sensor/

Metamaterials are proving to be quite useful for toying with the electromagnetic spectrum, whether for technology previously thought to be the stuff of science fiction, or for boring real-world applications. Engineers at Duke University have come up something that falls more into the latter category: a metamaterial imaging sensor that doesn't require a lens to generate a picture. The sensor is a flexible copper-plated sheet patterned with small squares that capture various light frequencies all at once, functioning like one big aperture. Add a few circuits with a pinch of software and the sensor-only camera can produce up to ten images per second, but the catch is Duke's only works at microwave frequencies. Microwave imaging is used plenty, however, and due to its flexibility and lack of moving parts, the sensor could be used to build better integrated, cheaper airport scanners and vehicle collision avoidance technology -- making you safer however you choose to travel. Unless you take the train. Then you're on your own.

Octogenarian hockey player happy to share game again with NHL pros

NIAGARA FALLS, New York (Reuters) - As an 89-year-old recreational hockey player who has never lost a tooth to a puck or an opponent's elbow, Paul Koukal is a man who knows how to beat the odds.

So when he says he is hopeful his beloved Buffalo Sabres will skate their way from this weekend's delayed National Hockey League season opener to their first Stanley Cup championship, he may be on to something.

"I think they should get it one of these days, maybe in my lifetime. They'd better hurry," said Koukal, a retired dentist as he donned skates on Thursday to play in his weekly men's league hockey game.

His "Leafs" shut out the "Canadiens" 4-0, and Koukal, wearing a jersey printed with the number 9 and "Doc" on the back, left the ice victorious.

"I don't go into the penalty box very often," Koukal said, explaining how he managed never to lose a tooth after decades playing a sport where a gaping smile is considered collateral damage.

To his family's cheers of "Doc, Doc, Doc," he skated out onto the public ice rink with his teammates in the non-contact Niagara Falls Senior Alumni Hockey League. They are retired factory workers, school administrators, physical therapists, electricians and accountants, most aged 45 to 75.

"We all started this thing back when we were 30 years old and now we're all getting up there, but we just love the sport so much we just keep going at it," said Leafs co-captain Jim Heft, 66, a retired electrician.

Tom Reilly, 75, from the opposing Canadiens team, called it a "respectful league" where players of similar strengths find one another on the ice.

"The younger guys will go up against the younger guys - if one of the older guys gets the puck, they'll let him make a play," said Reilly, who has no cartilage in his right knee and has two heart stents.

'ONE OF THE NICEST GAMES'

The NHL lockout delayed the start of the season - originally scheduled for October 11 - to Saturday, and shortened it to 48 games from 82. The Sabres' first game is on Sunday against the visiting Philadelphia Flyers.

During the lockout, the men's recreational league used its own resources to help quench participants' thirst for hockey.

"With the lockout, you look for different things to do, you know, you play more hockey," said Leafs player Pete Seefeld, 60, a retired manufacturing supervisor.

Over the years as a Sabres fan, Koukal has admired scores of players and, as the son of Czechoslovakian immigrants, was particularly drawn to goaltender Dominik Hasek of the Czech Republic.

Koukal said he had a soft spot for the sport, complete with its body-slamming checks and occasional brawls, calling it "one of the nicest games" because it can be played to different degrees of intensity.

"Old farts like us can chase the puck and get some exercise," Koukal said.

'Microbeads' May Boost Survival in Advanced Colon ... - Health.com

colon1027 Microbeads May Boost Survival in Advanced Colon Cancer Patients

By Maureen Salamon
HealthDay Reporter

SATURDAY, Jan. 19 (HealthDay News) ? For advanced colon cancer patients who have developed liver tumors, so-called ?radioactive beads? implanted near these tumors may extend survival nearly a year longer than among patients on chemotherapy alone, a small new study finds.

The same study, however, found that a drug commonly taken in the months before the procedure does not increase this survival benefit.

The research, from Beaumont Hospitals in Michigan, helps advance the understanding of how various treatment combinations for colorectal cancer ? the third most common cancer in American men and women ? affect how well each individual treatment works, experts said.

?I definitely think there?s a lot of room for studying the associations between different types of treatments,? said study author Dr. Dmitry Goldin, a radiology resident at Beaumont. ?There are constantly new treatments, but they come out so fast that we don?t always know the consequences or complications of the associations. We need to study the sequence, or order, of treatments.?

The study is scheduled to be presented Saturday at the International Symposium on Endovascular Therapy in Miami Beach, Fla. Research presented at scientific conferences has not been peer-reviewed or published and should be considered preliminary.

Goldin and his colleagues reviewed medical records from 39 patients with advanced colon cancer who underwent a procedure known as yttrium-90 microsphere radioembolization. This nonsurgical treatment, approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, implants tiny radioactive beads near inoperable liver tumors.

Thirty of the patients were pretreated with the drug Avastin (bevacizumab) in periods ranging from less than three months to more than nine months before the radioactive beads were placed.

The liver is a common site for the spread of colorectal cancer, which, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, is diagnosed in about 137,000 Americans and kills about 52,000 each year. Many of the liver tumors are inoperable, leaving doctors fewer choices to help prolong patients? lives.

Avastin is commonly prescribed for colon cancer that has spread (?metastatic? cancer) because the drug hinders the growth of new blood vessels that feed tumors.

With the yttrium-90 procedure, which has been in use at major U.S. medical centers for more than a decade, a catheter is inserted into a small incision near the groin and threaded through arteries until it reaches the hepatic artery in the liver, where millions of microbeads are released near tumor sites. These beads emit high-dose radiation directly to cancerous cells, sparing damage to healthy cells.

Goldin?s team found that 40 percent of the 17 patients with shorter intervals ? less than three months ? since their last Avastin dose before receiving the microbeads needed their microbead infusion stopped early due to slow blood flow near the tumors, a much higher number than patients whose last Avastin dose was further in the past. This was expected, Goldin said, because the main effect of Avastin is to cut tumors? blood supply.

Additionally, treatment with Avastin didn?t increase the survival benefit of the microbeads, which added 10 to 12 months to patients? life spans compared to chemotherapy alone, Goldin said ? a survival of 34.5 months after the diagnosis of metastatic colon cancer, compared with 24 months.

?If you look at those [survival] numbers, there?s a promising benefit? to using microbead radiation, he said. But the cost of both treatments is high ? in the tens of thousands of dollars per patient, he noted.

Dr. Felice Schnoll-Sussman, a gastroenterologist and director of research at the Jay Monahan Center for Gastrointestinal Health at New York-Presbyterian Hospital/Weill Cornell Medical Center in New York City, said the study won?t change her clinical approach to treating metastatic colon cancer. But ?it?s important for us to try to tease through the different treatment recommendations and understand how one treatment affects another,? she said.

?Maybe it helps you understand timing, which is never a terrible thing,? she added. ?This is the art of treatment of metastatic colorectal cancer ? it?s in the tweaking of the treatments.?

Israel is destroying itself with its settlement policy

Israel is destroying itself with its settlement policy

This week I participated in an Intelligence Squared London debate speaking in favour of the following motion: ?Israel is destroying itself with its settlement policy. If settlement expansion continues, Israel will have no future?. Also speaking in favour of the motion was William Sieghart, Founder and Chairman of Forward Thinking. Opposing the motion were Dani Dayan, Chairman of the Yesha Council of Jewish Communities in Judea and Samaria, and Caroline Glick, Senior contributing editor at the Jerusalem Post. You can watch the video of the lively debate - or read my opening statement below.

Daniel Levy: Opening Statement [as prepared for delivery, shortened at podium]

I would like to thank the organisers of Intelligence Squared and everyone here for joining us tonight.

Monty Python?s The Meaning of Life ? a film ? contains a scene, an obese chap, a caricature of obesity really, Mr Creosote. He walks into a restaurant. Apparently he is a regular. He orders everything on the menu, and a jeroboam of Champaign. After all this the waiter offers him just a wafer thin mint, and after a momentary hesitation Mr Creosote consumes said mint. He promptly explodes.

That for me is the danger that settlement overreach poses to Israel. Eventually it will explode in our faces: just one more wafer thin outpost; just a little E1.

I will now devote my remaining remarks to those of you not familiar with Monty Python?s The Meaning of Life.

There is a certain very powerful logic to the idea that Israel as we know it simply cannot co-exist with the relentless continuation and expansion of settlements in the occupied territories, a policy in contravention of international law.?

It goes like this, imagine three sides of a triangle that make up Israel?s basic choices, basic dilemmas:

One is a state with a Jewish character drawn from, among other things, a clear majority of its citizenry being Jewish.

Second is an Israel that is a recognisably democratic state observing democratic norms, respecting democratic rights and adhering to international conventions; the things that invest that definition of democracy with meaning?

And third an Israel that has all the territory. The territory of the biblical home if you like, the territory now under its control. The territory across which settlements have spread.

But in fact, Israel can only have two of those three sides of the triangle.

It can be democratic and Jewish in character but not have all the territory.

Or it can have all the territory and choose to give up either its democratic character or its Jewish character ? for with the territory comes its inhabitants and they can either be accorded democratic rights or denied them.

It?s a relatively simple equation. So let?s go a little deeper.

There are those who do accept this basic premise but who would still oppose this motion. One might call this the ?chill out about settlements? camp.

It?s a line you may have heard, accepting the inevitability of a two-state outcome while claiming that settlements ?are just not a big deal?, exaggerated as an issue - that they can always be removed and that there are other bigger problems.

While I would certainly agree that from a two-statist perspective settlements are not the only problem, that other challenges exist - practical, historical, opposing narratives, security - challenges that are there to varying degrees on both sides.

However, if one is operating in a two-state paradigm, then it is hard to avoid the conclusion that the single most prohibitive factor to achieving that outcome is the settlement enterprise.

The single biggest driving force toward the indivisibility of this land is the settlements.

Even if the actual built up area of settlements is small, only circa 1%, the areas under settlement jurisdiction ? settlement municipal and regional councils, planning and zoning rules ? those constitute 42.8% of the West Bank.

Settlements help define Palestinian access or rather lack of access to land and other resources such as water and quarries and to freedom of movement.

This picture becomes even more stark if one factors in patterns of settlement and land expropriation in Palestinian East Jerusalem, closing that area off from the rest of the territory of a possible future viable Palestinian state.

And settlements define a cognitive map that people carry with them, encouraging the Palestinians and the world to give up on a two-state outcome or at least consider it a vanishing prospect.

Settlements then are the factor most likely to precipitate an abandonment of the feasibility of two-states.

Which brings us to a variation on the ?chill out about settlements? theme. Namely, that the two-state model can accommodate any amount of settlement growth;

that the Palestinians will ultimately swallow any deal; any reduction of their territorial domain and contiguity; any infringement on their resource base, on their sovereignty, and even a state without Palestinian East Jerusalem. Taken to its extreme ? that they will accept a Bantustan like arrangement.

Let us not delude ourselves. The Palestinian leadership has accepted a mini-state on 22% of the land - the ?67 lines (even with equal land swaps) ? there is little room for further retreat. There is a point at which the aspiration for statehood under these circumstances become less attractive to Palestinians and the appeal of a one-state democracy carries the day.? This is true already for many Palestinians.

Settlements bring that day closer for many more.

But what if one is looking beyond the traditional two-state paradigm and thinking instead of alternative outcomes ? not at this stage a post-Israel one state model but variations on the two-state model ? for instance some form of confederation or a solution involving Jordan or a Belgium-style model?

Settlement policy also serves to reduce the prospects for any of these ideas. Will a Palestine Jordanian option or a Palestine that is part of a confederation be any more willing to base itself on atomised islands of land without resources or development potential, surrounded on all sides, with security arrangements still exclusively dictated by only one community?s needs.

Please, dream on.

There is a reason that two-former Israeli Prime Ministers ? Ehud Olmert and Ehud Barak as well as Israel?s most prominent cultural icon Amos Oz and many others have spoken of an approaching reality of South African style apartheid.

?And yet, I am quietly confident that these arguments will not be the focus of our debate today. I?m not inclined to believe that Messrs Glick and Dayan will tell us that if the Palestinians were to do X, Y, Z ? then they would be willing to evacuate settlements and withdraw. I guess they are not ready for this kind of a deal under any circumstances, so excuses of Palestinian lack of partner and such like are irrelevant.

But let?s not make this too easy on ourselves.

Let?s for a moment step outside this comfortable paradigm.

What if I am getting it all wrong? What if, like the toy shop, ?SETTLEMENTS R US?; that there is no difference between pre-67 and post-67 Israel, inside the Green Line and beyond the Green Line; that far from destroying Israel, settlement policy simply encapsulates the essence of what Israel is.

After all, Ramat Aviv and Tel Aviv University were built on the ruins of the Palestinian village of Sheikh Muwannis. Beersheba was Bir Saba; the list could go on, and on. So is it one continuous settlement policy that is the same whether it is in what we like to call democratic Israel or in the Occupied Territories.

I can certainly understand that from a Palestinian?s experience such distinctions might well appear to be a little arbitrary and not very relevant. And? a Palestinian might have rather less interest in whether Israeli is destroying itself or not as compared to say whether Palestinian rights and freedoms are able to be exercised or not. We have no Palestinian speakers here on the podium tonight, so that is not a debate we are set up to have. I do hope the organizers will present Palestinian perspectives in a future debate. Neither Mr Sieghart nor myself are Palestinians or are here as Palestinian advocates, and despite their attachment to Palestinian land, it is a role I would suggest neither Messrs Glick nor Dayan are cut out to play.

But there is of course such a perspective held within the Israeli-Zionist discourse. That Israel equals settlements.

What?s not to get here?

After 45 plus years of a settlement push, of a logic that if we return to Zion then of course we settle Hebron and not just newly created Tel Aviv.? As Palestinian-Israeli Knesset Member has argued of Israel?s design ? it is a democratic state for its Jewish citizens and a Jewish state for its Palestinian citizens.

Such a definition of Israel may sound more coherent, more compelling even more honest. ?And perhaps therefore our debate is rendered meaningless.

There is one problem though, and it is extremely relevant to our motion tonight.

That this is not how Israel has defined itself. Israel calls itself a democracy, a Jewish and democratic state; it enshrines these principals in its declaration of independence. It is a signatory to international charters and conventions that enshrine these principles. It is this Israel that has embedded itself in the community of nations, and in the hearts and minds of Jews across the world. It is this Israel that carries legitimacy. And it is also this Israel that has been recognized by the PLO and by the Arab states with whom we have peace, and conditionally by the entire Arab League.

And unless and until Israel re-defines itself as I don?t know, let?s say the Jewish Empire of Greater Israel ? until then, it is against this standard that the question of whether Israel is destroying itself with settlements must be judged.

Still you may say, come now, you are splitting hairs, what you just described ? that undemocratic over-reach Greater Israel of settlements is the real Israel

I am not willing to concede that just yet. I acknowledge Israel is an imperfect democracy, I want full equality for all citizens including the 20% of Israelis who are Palestinian, and to fight for a better democracy and one that comes to terms with what happened in ?48 and is confident and mature enough to openly address the Naqba with the Palestinians.

But none of these things can coexist with a settlement project whose very existence is undemocratic and denying of another people?s freedoms. Make no mistake; settlements are also the number one driver of Israel?s current democratic recession. The wave of anti-democratic and discriminatory legislation and stirrings of recent years.

First, because over time it becomes impossible to sustain a democracy on one side of the Green Line and impose a non-democracy on the other. And secondly because the very maintenance of this illegal occupation and the need to justify it is serving to shrink the space for democracy and dissent at home.?

Of course, there might be a caveat, an opening here. Can?t Israel just have all the land, confer rights on all the people and be a democracy, ?a bi-national democracy - a higher % of Jews, a lower % of Jews, no big deal, it?s the 21st century after all.

It is true, such an outcome cannot address either Palestinian or Jewish national aspirations - aspirations which led me to Israel and whose purchase on the dreams of Israelis and Palestinians remains strong and very understandable. It can also not ignore Gaza.

And don?t get me wrong ? a single state democracy is not the worst option, certainly not if the choice is narrowed to being between an ethnocracy or a democracy.

But in terms of this motion tonight, that too would be the destruction of Israel as we know it.

And finally this, and I want to be careful not to turn the ?Oy Vey? dial up too high, but the settlement policy is a driving factor in Israel endangering itself not just in the sense of defining what Israel is but in a very real physical sense. ?

Settlements constitute a genuinely high risk strategy for the security and well-being of Israel and Israelis. Quite simply, how does this story of the overreach that settlements represent, how does this end well?

Let?s just look at this for one moment;

In a new Arab reality in which democratic enfranchisement has come to the fore;

a reality in which technological gaps including Israel?s qualitative military edge are closing over time;

in which Israel is so dependent on the US;

in which Pal non-violent civil disobedience protests are gathering steam;

also in which armed uprisings against oppression have received regional and international support in Libya and in Syria and elsewhere;

and with Israel losing its legitimacy and experiencing a brain drain at home.

In such a reality are settlements the way forward, or are they the most dangerous manifestation of over-reach. Do they contribute to Israeli security or threaten to push us over the edge?

Is this our only future, and is it really a viable future, to live by the sword in perpetuity?

Settlements are what make pragmatic, realist policies most difficult for Israel to pursue.

I know, I know, I can see the speech bubbles coming out of peoples? heads.

na?ve, naive, naive, na?ve

That this is defeatist talk

If we ended the settlements would the Arabs really accept us?

They opposed us before ?67, after ?67, etc?

We cannot live in peace?

To me, that is the real defeatism, to believe there is no better future.

Are the Palestinians uniquely intolerant, uniquely impossible to make peace with; are we uniquely destined to be enemies for ever? I would argue, that this view is a-historical, a misreading of reality and more than a little bit prejudiced.

Unique, permanent unreasonableness does not apply to Palestinians or Muslims, and it does not apply to Jews or Israelis.

If we remove the casus belli, the burning humiliation of today and tomorrow, will everything still be dictated by the events of yesterday and history? Both peoples can be forward looking.

And to support this motion is not about poking Israel in the eye or to demonize every settler.

To support this motion is to send a message that settlements are taking us to a point of no return, that this is not a smart strategy for Israel?s future.

Thank you.

Sony CEO: High-end phones are our salvation

Sony CEO Kaz Hirai predicts the company?s ailing smartphone division will be turned around by a greater focus on high-end devices, such as the flagship?Xperia Z announced last week, as it abandons the feature-phone business. ?We are more in toward the high end of the market as opposed to trying to get into the commoditized portion? Hirai said in Japan today, Bloomberg?reports, buoyantly confident where Sony?s phone unit operating loss remains huge.

XPERIA-Z-ZL-12-slashgear-580x480

In fact, according to combined analyst predictions, Sony is on track to lose 17.2bn yen ($193m) in its next fiscal year, though the company itself is more confident. Previously, Sony said it aimed to have the next financial year be the twelve months where its phones turned a profit.

Key to doing that, Hirai points out, is focusing on where the money is: expensive, top-tier devices. ?We basically are out of the feature-phone business and in the Android-based smartphone business? the CEO explained. ?We need to have products that wow people, move people emotionally.?

Sony Xperia Z demo:

Whether the Xperia Z can trigger that emotional shift is unclear at this stage, though early feedback to the new smartphone was generally positive. Sony has borrowed features more commonly associated with Japanese devices, such as waterproofing, for its new flagship, and taken on high-spec rivals from Samsung and other firms with a Full HD display, 13-megapixel camera, and speedy quadcore processor. More in our full hands-on report.

It has also, finally, begun to connect the dots between its various product divisions, at last following up on the promises long made as part of the ?Four Screen? strategy. Also introduced at CES was One-touch mirroring, where an NFC phone such as the Xperia Z could be instantly paired with a Smart TV using an NFC-enabled remote control.

sony_one-touch_nfc_mirroring

?I believe we still have a lot of room to grow? Hirai insisted today, though the fact that the company continues to be outsold by key Android rival 6:1 suggests actually achieving that growth could be difficult. The firm is expected to reveal more smartphones at Mobile World Congress 2013, in late February, while an Xperia Tablet Z has been tipped for late January.

Obama Urges Congress to Ban Military-Style Assault Weapons, Ammo

WASHINGTON - Braced for a fight, President Barack Obama on Wednesday unveiled the most sweeping proposals for curbing gun violence in two decades, pressing a reluctant Congress to pass universal background checks and bans on military-style assault weapons and high-capacity ammunition magazines like the ones used in the Newtown, Conn., school shooting.

A month after that horrific massacre, Obama also used his presidential powers to enact 23 measures that don't require the backing of lawmakers. The president's executive actions include ordering federal agencies to make more data available for background checks, appointing a director of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, and directing the Centers for Disease Control to research gun violence.

But the president, speaking at White House ceremony, focused his attention on the divided Congress, saying only lawmakers could enact the most effective measures for preventing more mass shootings.

"To make a real and lasting difference, Congress must act," Obama said. "And Congress must act soon."

The president vowed to use "whatever weight this office holds" to press lawmakers into action on his $500 million plan. He is also calling for improvements in school safety, including putting 1,000 police officers in schools and bolstering mental health care by training more health professionals to deal with young people who may be at risk.

Even supportive lawmakers say the president's gun control proposals - most of which are opposed by the powerful National Rifle Association - face long odds on Capitol Hill.

House Speaker John Boehner's office was non-committal to the president's package of proposed legislation, but signaled no urgency to act. "House committees of jurisdiction will review these recommendations," Boehner spokesman Michael Steel said. "And if the Senate passes a bill, we will also take a look at that."

Senate Judiciary Committee Chairman Patrick Leahy said ahead of Obama's presentation that he didn't know whether an assault weapons ban could pass the Senate, but said there are some measures that can, such as improved background checks.

"There are some who say nothing will pass. I disagree with that," Leahy, D-Vt., told students at Georgetown University Law Center. "What I'm interested in is what we can get."

Acknowledging the tough fight ahead, Obama said there will be pundits, politicians and special interest groups that will seek to "gin up fear" that the White House wants to take away the right to own a gun.

"Behind the scenes, they'll do everything they can to block any commonsense reform and make sure nothing changes whatsoever," he said. "The only way we will be able to change is if their audience, their constituents, their membership says this time must be different, that this time we must do something to protect our communities and our kids."

The president was flanked by children who wrote him letters about gun violence in the weeks following the Newtown shooting. Families of those killed in the massacre, as well as survivors of the shooting, were also in the audience, along with law enforcement officers and congressional lawmakers.

"This is our first task as a society, keeping our children safe," Obama said. "This is how we will be judged."

Seeking to expand the impetus for addressing gun violence beyond the Newtown shooting, the president said more than 900 Americans have been killed by guns in the month since the elementary school massacre.

"Every day we wait, the number will keep growing," he said.

The White House has signaled that Obama could launch a campaign to boost public support for his proposals. Nearly six in 10 Americans want stricter gun laws in the aftermath of the Newtown shooting, with majorities favoring a nationwide ban on military-style, rapid-fire weapons and limits on gun violence depicted in video games, movies and TV shows, according to a new Associated Press-GfK poll.

A lopsided 84 percent of adults would like to see the establishment of a federal standard for background checks for people buying guns at gun shows, the poll showed.

The president based his proposals on recommendations from an administration-wide task force led by Vice President Joe Biden. His plan marks the most comprehensive effort to address gun violence since Congress passed the 1994 ban on high-grade, military-style assault weapons. The ban expired in 2004, and Obama wants lawmakers to renew and expand it.

Other measures Obama wants Congress to take up include limiting high-capacity ammunition magazines and requiring background checks for all gun buyers in an attempt to close the so-called "gun-show loophole" that allows people to buy guns at trade shows and over the Internet without submitting to background checks.

Obama also intends to seek confirmation for B. Todd Jones, who has served as acting director of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives since 2011.

The president's plan does little to address violent images in video games, movies and entertainment, beyond asking the CDC to study their impact on gun crimes. Some pro-gun lawmakers who are open to addressing stricter arms legislation have insisted they would do so only in tandem with recommendations for addressing violence in entertainment.

The president's long list of executive orders also include:

- Ordering tougher penalties for people who lie on background checks and requiring federal agencies to make relevant data available to the federal background check system.

- Ending limits that make it more difficult for the government to research gun violence, such as gathering data on guns that fall into criminal hands.

- Requiring federal law enforcement to trace guns recovered in criminal investigations.

- Giving schools flexibility to use federal grant money to improve school safety, such as by hiring school resource officers.

- Giving communities grants to institute programs to keep guns away from people who shouldn't have them.

2 killed in Egypt's apartment building collapse

CAIRO (AP) ? Egypt's official news agency says an eight-story apartment building collapsed in the Mediterranean port city of Alexandria, killing two people.

MENA said the collapse on Wednesday morning injured another seven people.

It was not immediately known what caused the building to collapse, but violations of building specifications have been blamed in the past for similar accidents.

The building collapse came one day after another deadly accident blamed on negligence took place. Early on Tuesday just south of Cairo, 19 police conscripts were killed and more than a 100 injured when a train's last car jumped the track, slammed into a parked train and then was dragged for several kilometers (miles).

FBI director in Libya to review Benghazi probe

(AP) ? The FBI director met with top Libyan officials on Thursday to discuss the probe into last year's killing of the U.S. ambassador in Benghazi where authorities are planning a curfew following an upsurge in violence, Libyan officials said.

Ambassador Chris Stevens and three other Americans were killed on Sept. 11, 2012 in an attack that Washington officials suspect was carried out by militants linked to the al-Qaida terrorist group. There has been little news of progress in the investigation, and U.S. officials have complained about poor cooperation with governments in the region.

The officials, who spoke on condition of anonymity because of the sensitive nature of the visit, said FBI Director Robert Mueller discussed the case in Tripoli with senior officials, including the prime minister, justice minister and intelligence chief.

It is unclear when authorities plan to impose a curfew following a string of deadly attacks, assassinations of top security officials and other unrest in recent months. Libyan Prime Minister Ali Zidan said on Wednesday that 18,000 new police recruits would be dispatched to the city to enforce the curfew.

Interior Minister Ashour Shaweil told reporters that when it starts, it will be enforced for five hours every night beginning at midnight. Several check points will be installed around the city, he said.

Authorities in Libya have been struggling to form unified army and police force since 2011 when former Libyan dictator Moammar Gadhafi was ousted and killed in a mass uprising that turned to armed conflict when citizens raised arms against Gadhafi's forces.

In recent months, there has been a series of assassinations of top security officials and bombings of security headquarters in the northeastern city of Benghazi. Some blame Islamist extremists, but residents suspect more than one group is involved and that some of the violence is being carried out by those who have personal vendettas against officials who once served in Gadhafi's police force.

What Do #FF, #TBT, #GFF, FOH, RLRT And Other Twitter & Instagram Hashtags & Terms Mean?

This glossary/dictionary will teach you the meanings behind key hashtags, abbreviations and slang terms like #FF, #TBT, #Icant, #Dead, SMH, FOH, #YOLO, CTFU and more. Many of them appear in both hashtag and written format, and they are all subject to the interpretation of the particular user, so don't take any of them as gospel.

And please let us know in the comments if there are any others we should add to this list, or if you feel that any of these definitions are incorrect. Enjoy!

#FF - This hashtag mostly shows up on Fridays, which should give you a good indication of what one of the Fs means. The other stands for Follow, and the two combine to make the phrase "Follow Friday." Follow Friday is essentially a Twitter holiday with the aim of getting people to follow one another. If you want someone to follow a musician, politician, friend or anyone else you think is interesting or?should have more followers, simply tweet out a message listing their username (as in @username) along with the #FF hashtag. This is usually done in list form, with users tweeting a list of usernames along with #FF, so that people who trust their judgment can add a bunch of?interesting accounts to their feeds.

#TBT - (Throwback Thursday) This is another "holiday" Twitter and Instagram hashtag, which shows up every Thursday on both sites. The impetus behind this one is that it is an opportunity for people to share photos and info that is a "throwback" to an earlier time. For instance, on Instagram, posting a picture of yourself as a child or when you were in school, or on Twitter telling a short quip about something in your past. This is a fun way for people to learn a little bit more about each other, and to see the funny or interesting past that each of us have, but many of our followers and friends don't know about.

#ICant, #Cryin #ImCrying and #Dead - These hashtags, and?similar variations of them, are all a little bit misleading, but once you get one you can pretty much understand them all. Basically, when someone posts #ImDead, #Crying, #ICant or another similar hashtag, it means that something is hilarious, or very shocking. For instance, tweeting "Watch this video of this standup comedian's new bit #DEAD #ICant," would indicate that the video linked to or being commented on is so funny that the person is "dead" and "can't" go on living - meaning it's insanely funny. A little weird, but you get the point. It can also be used as a short-hand response to a funny or shocking image on Instagram.

I'm Out or #ImOut - This is basically a way of relaying the fact that a user thinks something is so insane, ridiculous or offensive that the person is done using Twitter or Instagram for the day. Obviously, this can be a literal signing off of the site, or just a way of saying that the thing in question has the person questioning his or her use of that social media site, though they may continue to stay logged in and engaging with the site.

SMH - This one is a carryover from the world of text-messaging, and it stands for "Shaking My Head." Basically, it means that the user who posts it is shaking his or her head either in disgust, shame, shock or some other form of reaction to the content it is referencing.

LMAO, LMFAO - This one also comes from the text-messaging and instant-messaging world, and it means either "Laughing My A-- Off," or "Laughing My F---ing A-- Off." Clearly it just means something is funny.

LOL, Lls - These both mean "Laugh Out Loud," one of the most ubiquitous of all such abbreviations, and they both indicate that the user who posts it thinks something is funny.

#YOLO - This is an abbreviation for "You Only Live Once." It can be interpreted in a number of ways, but most often indicates an activity that shows someone is living on the edge, either literally or sarcastically.

FOH, GTFO - These stand for "F--- Outta Here" and "Get The F--- Out." They both are terms used to dismiss whatever is being referenced.

HT or H/T - These both mean "hat tip," and are generally used to express endorsement or admiration of the content or user being referenced.

OH or RLRT - These stand for "overheard" or "Real-Life Retweet" and are used to?reference something that a user has overheard in their real life. They are generally used in reference to shocking, odd or funny snippets of overheard conversations.

DM - (Direct Message) This one is a little bit more complicated, so we will let the official Twitter glossary break it down for you as follows: "Also called a DM and most recently called simply a "message," these Tweets are private between the sender and recipient. Tweets sent over SMS become DMs when they begin with "d username" to specify who the message is for.?Learn more about direct messages."

#GFF - This is one that you should avoid at all costs, according to Twitter's official glossary, which has this to say about it: "Sites that promise to get you more followers if you provide your username and password. After signing up, these sites send spam from your account. Don't use them."

RT - Another one best left to the official Twitter glossary, which defines it as: "Abbreviated version of "retweet." Placed before the retweeted text when users manually retweet a message. See also Retweet.?Find out more about retweets."

MT - One more that Twitter's official glossary define better than we can: "Similar to RT, an abbreviation for "Modified Tweet." Placed before the retweeted text when users manually retweet a message with modifications, for example shortening a Tweet."

We hope this glossary has been helpful, and once again invite you to add any hashtags, abbreviations or slang terms we may have forgotten (or that come out after this article is published), or to point out any possible corrections to the definitions we have offered.
