Hueytown-based Empire Refractory acquired by Texas company

BIRMINGHAM, Alabama - Empire Refractory Specialists Inc., a Hueytown-based supplier of heat-resistant materials for industrial use, has been acquired by a subsidiary of Thorpe Specialty Services Corp.

The terms of the deal were not disclosed.

John Schultz, chief operating office of Houston-based Thorpe Specialty Services, said Empire and Thorpe subsidiary Thorpe-Sunbelt Inc. are a good fit.

"We are very excited to have Ron Snell, David Hampton, and the rest of the Empire team join Thorpe," Schultz said in a prepared statement. "Their commitment to best-in-class safety, high quality workmanship and excellent customer service are aligned with Thorpe's values, and their capabilities in the lime, cement, pulp/paper and steel dust recycling industries enhance our existing capabilities in those areas."

Snell, president and CEO of Empire, said the deal gives his company access to new resources.

"We were especially interested in the opportunity to offer Thorpe's extensive engineering and design expertise, mechanical capabilities, and labor force to our existing and future customers," he said.

Empire's management and work force will be retained, and the company will operate under the Thorpe-Sunbelt Inc. name.
